The
Tasmanian Liberals travelled to St
Helens for a two
day planning meeting. We also found time for a
social function to meet with local community
members, visited some small businesses, including
the St Helens History Room, and met with members of
the St Helens
Marine Rescue who provide a valuable service for
those on the seas off Tasmania’s East Coast.
St Helens
was the obvious choice for our first community
visit, given the tough times it has recently
experienced with massive bush fires ravaging the
region and destroying more than twenty properties.
We launched
200 Tassie Towns - a central part of our
commitment to travel the State extensively, meeting
with people, community groups and businesses finding
out what is important to them.
Tasmania’s
East Coast is a wonderful place, but it faces a
number of challenges. Water quality, demands on
infrastructure, and a worrying decline in tourism
were some of the main issues raised with us.
Marine
Rescue is after a new vessel to carry out its
important work, and we will do what we can to help
them. And Rene
Hidding,
our Member for Lyons
and Shadow Minister for Emergency Management, has
recently proposed a State Parliamentary inquiry into
reducing the threat of wildfires and better
equipping fire fighters to tackle this too frequent
natural disaster.
We had a very productive and enjoyable couple of
days in St Helens, including a delightful meal at
the Angasi Restaurant at Binalong Bay.
