The Minister for Education, Mr Bartlett, will not
confirm the State Government’s commitment to “build
a new state-of-the-art high school at Kingston”.
The revelation came in Parliament today when the
Leader of the Opposition and Liberal Member for
Franklin, Will Hodgman, pressed Mr Bartlett.
“The Minister would not confirm the commitment to
build a new $30 million high school at Kingston, as
promised at the 2006 election,” Mr Hodgman said.
“Mr Bartlett was shifty in the way he responded to
questioning and failed to confirm whether he will
commit to Labor’s promise to “give students in
Kingston improved educational opportunities with an
outstanding new Kingston High School to be built in
the Kingborough Sports Centre precinct” (Labor’s
Plan for Education, 20/03/06).
“Last week I tabled a petition signed by 1,010
Kingborough residents calling on the State
Government to honour its commitment to build a new
state-of-the-art high school at Kingston, on land at
the Kingborough Sports Centre.
“The Minister must immediately confirm for the 1,010
petitioners and other residents of the Kingborough
area that he will build the school and not just
embark on a capital works program to improve the
existing school.
“The community was promised a new high school and it
has every right to expect one.
“This State Government is already racking up a long
list of broken election promises and this must not
become the latest one.
“Mr Bartlett must stop being cute with his wording
and give real assurance to the residents of
Kingborough.”
