The State Government needs to explain whether a new
tax being contemplated by Tas Ports would apply to
all its facilities, not just those at Strahan.
It
should also explain how the imposition of such a new
levy would fit with Labor’s promise not to introduce
any new taxes.
The Premier declined an opportunity to clarify these
issues in State Parliament today.
Leader of the State Opposition, Will Hodgman, said
he was staggered that Tas Ports had mistakenly sent
Strahan tourism operators a letter detailing a new
levy to apply from January 1, that it now says was a
draft letter meant to be filed.
However, the fact is that this letter was prepared
in the first place and it obviously didn’t come to
that without reason.
The new levy has not been ruled out by either Tas
Ports, or the Premier, but consultation on the
matter has now been promised.
“This appears to be classic Labor consultation –
make a decision first, and consult later,” Mr
Hodgman said.
“Tourism operators are entitled to answers over a
matter that has caused considerable concern and that
has been handled in a less than professional way.”
He said the Tourism Minister also had failed to take
the opportunity to rule out such a tax on behalf of
the industry.
