The State Opposition says the State Government needs
to fully commit to launching a comprehensive plan to
eradicate rodents and rabbits wrecking Macquarie
Island.
The State Opposition Leader and Shadow Minister for
Tourism, Arts and the Environment, Will Hodgman,
said he’d noted calls from the National Parks
Association (Tasmania) for the resignation of the
Minister, Ms Wriedt, over the matter.
“I can understand the frustration that’s being felt,
as Ms Wriedt just doesn’t seem to understand the
urgency of the matter,” Mr Hodgman said.
“She’s presided over a 50 p.c. blow out in the
budget for the eradication programme and is playing
small time politics with the Federal Government in
an attempt to walk away from her responsibilities.
“I call on Ms Wriedt to forget the politics and
start thinking about the Macquarie island flora and
fauna and commit her share of the funding required
to launch a full-scale programme to deal with this
problem.
“If she doesn’t then she’d better begin to think
about the ultimatum of the National Parks
Association.”
