Today’s Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Labour
Force figures indicate there is still much for the
State Government to do if it is to reach budget
targets.
The Leader of the Opposition, Will Hodgman, said it
was pleasing that the State has recorded positive
employment growth, but warned the State Treasurer,
Mr Aird, that the level is well below what he
projected in the Budget and is still below his
revised down figure in the Mid-Year Budget Review.
“Total employed people in Tasmania remains 100 jobs
less than was recorded at the end of the 2005-06
financial year,” Mr Hodgman said.
“The ABS figures also highlighted Tasmania’s
unchanged participation rate, which remains at
60.1%, the worst of any state or Territory.
“The Treasurer must acknowledge the State’s poor
participation rate is one of the main obstacles to
the State’s future economic growth, especially
combined with a skills shortage and an ageing
population.”
