Today we
drove up to George Town to attend a community BBQ.
It was a long day in the car, but a nice chance for
Nicky, the kids and I to share each others company
for a while! It was a great BBQ, and I met with
heaps of locals, including the Mayors of George Town
and the West Tamar. George Town is a vibrant
industrial hub with, of course, the exciting
prospect of a $1.5 billion pulp mill on the table.
We went to
the 2006 Election with a policy to get George Town
“pulp mill ready” and better equipped to deal with
the major challenge that will come with this massive
project. It is important that government provide
support to deal with the various infrastructure
demands, the need to locate and accommodate a
sufficient skilled workforce, and the various social
impacts of such a major development. I would think
though that the resilient and industrious community
of George Town would be up to the challenge!
Our drive through the midlands made us appreciate
how tough it is for farmers, with very dry
conditions creating a barren landscape with little
stock visible from the highway.
