Drove north, though
the very dry midlands, to Longford. Met the Mayor of
the Northern Midlands Council, Kim Polley, with
Jeremy Rockliff and Rene Hidding. The most pressing
issue, as with many other councils, is water
infrastructure. In Ross, people are still unable to
drink the town water supply and are being warned
skin contact with it may cause problems, after a
blue-green algal bloom was found in December.
Businesses say they have experienced a decline in
tourists and the council has written to the Premier
seeking natural disaster relief, similar to that
provided to bushfire victims on the East Coast,
while also turning its attention to long-term water
solutions.

We then went
across to Evandale to attend the very popular
Evandale Village Fair and National Penny
Farthing Championships. We took the opportunity
to catch up with Councillor Ian Goninon, who is
chairman of the Northern Midlands Business
Association. We discussed, amongst other things,
the need for works on the Evandale Main Road,
with major increases in traffic and accompanying
safety concerns. The government has indicated
that upgrading this State Government road is a
low priority. |
A gorgeous, sunny day
- perfect for the Fair and National Penny Farthing
Championships. It was the first time I had attended,
and it is a fantastic spectacle. Thousands converge
on Evandale each year to watch what has become an
increasingly popular, and internationally recognised
event, since the first race in 1983.
