TRUSCOTT STREET PUBLIC SCHOOL
CARE AND SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS POLICY

Truscott Street’s Care and Supervision policy has been written within the framework of the Department of School Education’s Policy statements Care and Supervision of Students 97/165 (S.156 ), Excursions and Other Visits 97/137 (S.129) and Guidelines for Bushwalking 97/205 (S.191).

STATEMENT
The Truscott Street school community endorses the view that the school and its staff  actively provide for the protection, safety and welfare of its students. Ensuring the protection, safety and welfare of each student helps create the foundation for an effective learning environment.

DUTY OF CARE
Duty of care is the duty to take reasonable care to protect students against risks of injury which reasonably should have been foreseen. The duty of care also includes the prevention of a student injuring other students or members of the public and protecting students from sexual, physical and emotional abuse and neglect and from improper conduct of a sexual nature by staff.

Truscott Street school staff accept their Duty of Care  responsibility to all students. This duty of care is exercised by school staff during school hours, and before and after school hours when students are in the school’s care and the school has assumed responsibility for and supervision of students.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STAFF
Staff must provide effective, active supervision of students:

?  during the teaching and learning process;

?  during activities within the school grounds and buildings;

?  when students are participating in school excursions, sporting activities and other  activities organised by the school.

Particular care must be exercised when students are crossing busy roads adjacent to the school and when students are arriving and departing by bus and taxi.

SUPERVISION PLAN
Truscott Street has a supervision plan that incorporates  the following features:

? supervision arrangements and responsibilities at various times throughout the day including teaching and learning activities, recess and lunch breaks, and before and after school;

? fixed playground equipment will be directly supervised at all times when in use;

? general arrangements for variations to school routines for events such as; school sport, school sports carnivals, gala days and festival and activity days;

? arrangements for major activities at non school locations e.g. excursions and camps;

? an annual review process and endorsement by the School Council.
 

CURRICULUM SUPPORT
The school will monitor, review and implement curriculum materials where appropriate such as Safer Routes to School Program designed to promote student safety.

STAFF TRAINING EMERGENCY CARE
All staff will be involved in a training and accreditation program to ensure the school has appropriately trained staff in the area of emergency care.

Excursions involving swimming or water based activities or overnight stays will be accompanied by a member of staff who possesses a current cardio-pulmonary and emergency care training.

All other excursions and sporting activities will be accompanied by a member of staff who has undertaken emergency care training.
