WHAT   LIVES   IN   A
WETLAND?

Wetlands are the home for a huge variety of plants and animals.  They are also the place for animals to come and drink, wash and feed.

Some animals such as frogs and dragonflies come to the water to breed.

Some animals and plants live on the waters edge, some on the surface, some on the muddy bottom and other creatures live in the open water.

The flow of the water determines the types of animals and plants that live in it.

One Special creature we learnt about is:

The Western Swamp Tortoise

The western swamp tortoise is only found in an area near Perth.  They were thought to be extinct until 1953 when a boy found one.  In Spring and Winter when the swamps are full the tortoise feeds on small aquatic invertebrates.  They also mate during this time.  During summer when the swamps have dried out, they aestivate in holes or under leaf litter.  Before summer the female tortoises lay their eggs in nests.  The young tortoises hatch when the rains come in late autumn and early winter.

The main threat to the western swamp tortoise are foxes and habitat loss.  To protect the tortoise, fox proof fences have been built around the swamps.
