APPEARANCE:
The platypus is brown
and covered with fur. It has four legs and a tail. Its eyes are slit in
front of its ears. On its bill it has two nostrils.

FOOD:
It eats yabbies, worms,
insects, fish eggs and water plants.

HABITAT:
The platypus lives in
both hot and cold climates in freshwater creeks, rivers and lakes in Eastern
Australia from Cooktown in North Queensland to Tasmania.

MOVEMENT:
The platypus has webbed
feet to help it swim.

PROTECTION:
It uses its strong claws
to fight its enemies. It hides in its burrow and that’s how it gets away
from its enemies.

The platypus cannot breathe
under water.

It swims under water.
It can open its eyes in salt water.

REPRODUCTION:
The female lays two small,
rubbery eggs at the end of the long burrow.
