The modern miner wears a helmet, glasses, special shoes and they also carry budgies and canaries.  The miners carry canaries and budgies in case there are poisonous gases.

The benefits of mining include gems for jewellry, minerals for industry, money for Australia and it's fun searching for them!

The disadvantages of living near a mine include: the mine could collapse, the environment can be damaged and there are chemical hazards.
