Water Temperature
Does the temperature affect what happens in a body of water?

Yes, the temperature can effect what happens in a body of water because warm water results in algae and plant growth.

In a large body of water does the temperature change?

The temperature can change due to
1. Depth - deep water is colder than shallow water.
2. Currents - warmer currents, cooler currents.
3. Time of the year - warmer months, cooler months.

What happens to life in the water when the temperature changes?

When the water temperature gets warmer plants and algae grow and that can attract fish. However, some fish prefer cold water and cannot live in warmer water.

Extra growth of plants and algae can cause the flow of the water to decrease because the water cannot flow as freely as it did before.  This will cause a decrease in oxygen because the water is not bubbling and churning which creates the oxygen in the water.

Who or what might cause changes in temperature in the waterways?

Changes in the temperature can be caused by natural means and activities related to humans. If the flow is stopped then the temperature of the water would rise.

~ Natural means e.g..  snow begins to melt and ice cold water flows in the streams, water is released from the deep parts of a dam so cold water enters a river.
~ Human activity e.g.. power stations taking in water and making power and putting warm water back.
