the coast

Most of the coastline of the SE Forests is protected by National Parks and Nature Reserves and much of it is a remarkable wilderness. Wild country continues much of the way to the highest point of the continent.

The coastal leg of the walks started at Point Hicks. Inspiring sights abounded all along the way.

John Blay has researched the journey undertaken by shipwrecked sailors, who walked from near Wilsons Promontory to Sydney in 1797 before there was any European settlement in the region. Close examination of their journal shows that very little has changed in many of the wildest places. Their record of first contact with the old Kooris has inspired Blay to incorporate their story in an account of walking the coast.

In Nadgee, where the wild forests meet coastal heath, wildlife still abounds much it always has. The black swans come here to fledge.
