A walk in some great Aussie gardens

Where things bloom before the spring

It gets harder to leave your warm bed each morning. Out on the street, the wind has an edge that cuts through your clothing. You can't help but know the depths of winter are coming round again. The drab greyness begins to get to you. You want something different to help your spirits break free, and when you hear rumours of colour and excitement, you go in search.

When you get there, it looks so new and big that the effect can be daunting. Open space lies everywhere: grasslands, lawns and eucalyptus woodland. Uninitiated visitors drive slowly, wondering how they can begin. Mount Annan Botanic Garden, the native-plant garden of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, lies about an hour's drive to the south-west of the city's winter misery. It marks the furthest edge of Sydney as you drive towards Melbourne on the freeway south.
