Remember - "There are no strangers in the world - only friends we haven't met yet".
Over many years we had plenty to do with children: through activities organised around the schools in which Nole taught; through a program called Kid's Friends run in Australia by the Barnardo's welfare organisation; by looking after the children of friends; or by providing foster care for children. We stopped providing foster care several years ago, but we still have regular contact with one of the girls for whom we provided care. This young lady has just turned 16 and now lives with some of her friends in Canberra.
A few years ago we decided that we were still young enough to bring up more children. We had seen the extreme poverty in which some children lived in less developed countries, so we decided to try to adopt a couple of children from overseas. We have since discovered that there are hundreds of thousands of children living without parents in institutions. The one thing that most of them want is a family to grow up in and parents to love them.
We have just been overjoyed because in February 2000 we brought home our two children from Romania. They are a 7 year old boy named Iulian and an 8 year old girl named Ionela.
The story and photos of our trip to meet them and bring them home is here.
