Patrick Dougherty and Annie née Diver lived on the townland of Fycorranagh, very close to Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland. At least seven of their children seem to have emigrated to New Zealand.

Edward Kearney (or Carney) and Annie née McCool (below) lived on the neighbouring townland of Ardaganny, and had seventeen children, the youngest of whom was born in 1874. Four of this family emigrated to New Zealand, while the others either remained in Ireland, or emigrated to Scotland or the United States.

Edward and Annie Kearney

Charles Dougherty (1851-1929) married Sarah Kearney (1865-1929) at Letterkenny on 30 July 1882. Within a year they were in Maryborough, Queensland, where their first child Patrick was born, and by 1885 they were in Oamaru, North Otago, where their seocnd child Annie was born. The descendants of Charles Dougherty and Sarah Kearney held a reunion at Gimmerburn/Ranfurly, Central Otago, New Zealand, on 6–8 April 2007. This website is part of work towards producing a family history.
