LUNAR ECLIPSE IMAGES - an Archive

from the Calwell Lunar Observatory

Purpose

Over the last few years the Observatory (previously established in South Australia) has accumulated many eclipse images by transfer from Video records, by direct CCD capture and from other sources.

There has been some interest in accessing these images more directly so this ARCHIVE has been buildt to allow others to download and use these images.

Arrangement

During the Soulsby Series of lunar eclipse studies images were first received from the Netherlands in 1991. However, the earliest images captured by the Observatory commenced in 1989 from the Paradise Lunar Observatory in South Australia, now relocated in the Australian Capital Territory for the current continuing series of lunar studies at the Calwell Lunar Observatory.

The images have been archived by the Soulsby Series number, eclipse date, time, location, and in some cases umbral measurement. Each set of images can be found through the link provided.

The early observations and analysis considered many lunar eclipse crater timings contributed by astronomers throughout the world. From which the enlargement of the umbra was determined and the umbral oblateness estimated - these earlier eclipses did not include images.

Other imaging

In addition to the lunar eclipse imaging other CCD images were taken of the moon for various projects as follows:

a. Search for the Blair Cuspids images

b. Transient lunar phenomena images

c. Polariser experiments images

d. Surface of the moon and Clementine images
