Record YOUR first contact (1C - where the umbral shadow edge contacts the leading rim of each named feature) and YOUR second contact (2C - where the umbral edge leaves the following rim of each named feature, as shown in Figure 1 of * the Observer's Guide), and/or any other craters you can identify during the eclipse:
Record YOUR third contact (3C - where the umbral shadow edge first reveals the leading rim of each named feature) and YOUR fourth contact (4C - where the umbral edge reveals the following rim of each named feature as shown in Figure 1 of * the Observer's Guide), and/or any other craters you can identify during the eclipse:

FOURTH CONTACT |
NOTE: The author has developed a new computer program to predict improved primary contact times using the recently established mean observed umbral oblateness value of 1/102 (Soulsby, 1990).
When applied to the primary contact data for 1997 September 16 the corrected values of primary contacts for 1 C, was 17h 08m 05s, or 8.6s LATER, 2 C at 18h 15m 59s, or 46.5s LATER, 3 C at 19h 17m 38s, or 14.6s EARLIER and 4 C at 20h 25m 05s, or 3s EARLIER than the circumstances given above, each due to oblateness of the umbra.
This web page includes the 1997 Astronomical Almanac data.
A reminder regarding your Observations
Please remember to include your name, site details, instrumentation, timing source and weather conditions in your observer's report with your crater timings, and send your observational data to me by e-mail for prompt analysis.
I hope you have clear conditions and many successful timings.
