Penumbral Lunar Eclipse 2002 May 26
Fadden Lunar
Observatory
The following images were captured with
my Canon Ixus digital still camera mounted behind a 800 mm telephoto
lens.
Here is an animated *.gif of all eleven
images, the penumbra was obscured near penumbral second contact due
to the restricted field of view at 2 times camera zoom.
This digital image was taken at
13h53m35s.
This digital image was taken at
13h53m51s, it is partially obscured by the limited field of
view.
I have analysed one of
these images to identify the penumbra near the time of penumbral
second contact.
This image has been processed to show
the threshold level at 112 grayscale which clearly shows the effect
of the penumbral darkening of the Moon at the bottom of the image
shown above some 25 seconds before penumbral second
contact.
Using NIH Software the adjacent plot
shows the darkening of the Moon near the bottom of the image taken at
13h53m35s.
