The 1988 March 18 Total Solar Eclipse

at Bangka Island, Indonesia

Introduction

An expedition to Bangka Island, Indonesia was undertaken by the Canberra Astronomical Society in 1988 to observe the Total Solar Eclipse.

Two groups travelled to observe Baily's Beads and Cathie and Byron Soulsby were successful after setting up near the coastal beach known as Pantai Tengarri at Point Lajang near the village of Sungailiat, Bangka Island. The publicaton gives a detailed account of this successful observation.

The eclipse circumstances at Palohwaru and some of the Baily's Beads predicted for this site are included in the images below:

Predicted Baily's Beads

Below is a screen capture of several Baily's Beads as predicted. The solution for these beads shows that correction to the Sun's radius is -0.70" of arc. It is expected that a full analysis of the beads reported will enhance this value.

The above Baily's Beads were predicted from David Herald's Occult Program and can be compared with those in the publicaton as observed at Pantai Tengarri at Point Lajang in 1988.
