

Arid, desert-like conditions exist in the southwestern area
of Margarita including El Yaque where you will see cactus amid
beach front palm trees. The island interior will hold surprises
including a rain forest, mangrove sanctuaries and breathtaking
mountaintops. Quaint coastal cities, colonial plazas, church and
forts offer interesting diversions for daytime exploration. There
are two National Parks and three Natural Monuments on the island
youll be enchanted with La Restinga lagoon, a National Park
with an extension of 26,439 acres, the biggest one on the island
that has a lagoon of 18 square miles with beautiful
canals and mangroves. Margarita is only 9 degrees from the equator.
Daytime air temperature averages 85 90 degrees and water
temperature is typically in the low 80s. You will notice
very little variation in climate between summer and winter.
Spanish is the official language of Margarita although English
is commonly spoken in the tourist areas. Currency is the Venezuelan
bolivar. You will need a valid passport for entry to Margarita
and you need to be sure that is does not have an expiration date
within 6 months of your travel dates.
Beyond the sleepy fishing village of El Yaque, the Island of Margarita offers adventure and exploration. Margarita is actually two islands connected by a narrow strip of land or isthmus that forms the north side of the lagoon called La Restinga a National Park. Along the north side is Guardia Bay Beach, known for its many miles of beachfront restaurants. You can journey through winding canals and lagoons on wooden boat tours throughout these waters. You will see schools of colorful fish and a variety of shore birds including pelicans wading for their meals.Organized tours are available to take you through the small towns and villages throughout Margarita. Spanish churches and forts, Colonial castles, beautiful beaches and tropical valleys dot the countryside. For a change of pace, visit Los Roques National Park for snorkeling and swimming and dont forget to experience the speed sailing along the beach at Coche Island a day trip from El Yaque by boat.

local handicraft work in baskets, pottery and hammocks.
Restaurants and Nightlife Within a 10 minute walk in any direction
along the
beach in El Yaque; there is a great variety of reasonably priced
food.
Specialty nights are featured at many of the hotel restaurants;
Mexican
food, pizza, pasta, seafood and steaks are available in a relaxed
casual
beachfront atmosphere. Food and drink is very inexpensive all
over the
island.
