Where is Margarita Island?

Located just 20 miles off South America’s northeastern coast, is the Venezuelan Island of Margarita. Our condo is situated in El Yaque Beach a small fishing village with lovely palm tree lined beaches. Margarita Island is 360 square miles with about 100 miles of coast

Arid, desert-like conditions exist in the southwestern area of Margarita including El Yaque where you will see cactus amid beach front palm trees. The island interior will hold surprises including a rain forest, mangrove sanctuaries and breathtaking
mountaintops. Quaint coastal cities, colonial plazas, church and forts offer interesting diversions for daytime exploration. There are two National Parks and three Natural Monuments on the island you’ll be enchanted with La Restinga lagoon, a National Park with an extension of 26,439 acres, the biggest one on the island that has a lagoon of 18 square miles with beautiful
canals and mangroves. Margarita is only 9 degrees from the equator. Daytime air temperature averages 85 – 90 degrees and water temperature is typically in the low 80’s. You will notice very little variation in climate between summer and winter.
Spanish is the official language of Margarita although English is commonly spoken in the tourist areas. Currency is the Venezuelan bolivar. You will need a valid passport for entry to Margarita and you need to be sure that is does not have an expiration date within 6 months of your travel dates.

Beyond the sleepy fishing village of El Yaque, the Island of Margarita offers adventure and exploration. Margarita is actually two islands connected by a narrow strip of land or isthmus that forms the north side of the lagoon called La Restinga – a National Park. Along the north side is Guardia Bay Beach, known for its many miles of beachfront restaurants. You can journey through winding canals and lagoons on wooden boat tours throughout these waters. You will see schools of colorful fish and a variety of shore birds including pelicans wading for their meals.Organized tours are available to take you through the small towns and villages throughout Margarita. Spanish churches and forts, Colonial castles, beautiful beaches and tropical valleys dot the countryside. For a change of pace, visit Los Roques National Park for snorkeling and swimming and don’t forget to experience the speed sailing along the beach at Coche Island – a day trip from El Yaque by boat.
