Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island, SA
By John & Vicki Godwin
My name’s River. I
get around a bit but not as much as some of the people I see coming through my
favourite place, the Flinders Chase NP on Kangaroo Island. I’m a lazy traveller and I spend most of my
time in and around the Rocky River
camping ground right next to the Flinders Chase Visitors’ Centre.

You can get an idea of the camping ground
from the photos taken by the tourists who are writing this for me.
That’s their van in one of the 21 sites here. The sites are separated from each other by
shrubs and trees and all are just a short walk from the very clean
facilities. Even so, the park is for
those with simple tastes.
Talking about tastes, there are signs around the park
telling tourists to observe the wildlife but not feed us.
Some tourists can’t read or don’t bother, and
we do get a bit to eat.

The two people
writing this were mean and didn’t feed us at all. My son Joey - that’s him with
his head on the picnic table trying to win a heart - and I tried and tried; we sat at their feet
and nuzzled them gently, but in three days all we got was water.

|
The two people had seen kangaroos drinking
from small puddles on the road after a shower of rain, and thought that giving
us water would be safer. Son Joey raided
their camp water bucket, and then stood up tall and tried a bit of boxing when
they tried to move him. You can usually
see him doing that with his mates, but the tourist took a backward step and
gave Joey real confidence in his powers to intimidate.
