Zhigen Wilson Lin

Uni: None.

Envisaged career: It really depends. Right now, I don’t have very strong views on things.

Favourite sport/hobby: Obviously chess, but also table tennis.

Notable non-chess achievement: I’ve often being nominated for leadership positions at school but I don’t really like doing them.

Notable chess achievement: Right now, I’m 1st Under 16 in Victoria, which is really strange. If no one sneaks ahead of me this year, I’ll probably be 2nd Under 18 next year when Chris Wallis will probably be 1st.

Favourite player: have many, but on the highest ‘priority’: Kasparov, Karpov (I took a photo with him at Belfort), Dzindzichashvili and Seirawan.

Favourite book: Nunn’s Chess Openings.

First learned chess: At the age of 8.

First taught by: My mother and my computer.

Chess club: Box Hill Chess Club.

Things I like about chess comps: They help me annotate my games and check my analysis.

Things I don't like about chess comps: They sometimes change their minds after you’ve already come to a definite conclusion.

Jason Hu

Uni: University of Sydney (Bachelor of Secondary Education of Mathematics/ Bachelor of Science).

Envisaged career: Maths/Physics/Chess teacher, poker, and running my own business one day.

Favourite sport/hobby: Chess, Poker, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Archery, Tennis etc.

Notable non-chess achievement: 17th in regional cross country.

Notable chess achievement: Winner of Junior Masters in 2004.

Notable non-chess achievement: Dux of Bilgola Plateau Primary School 2004, elected into the Student Representative Council of Manly Selective Campus last year for 2006.

Notable chess achievement: Becoming Australian Junior Champion U12 in 2004 and representing Australia in the World Youth Championships U12 in 2004.

Tomek Rej

Uni: Sydney University.

Envisaged career: Something to do with computer programming or chess.

Favourite sport/hobby: Chess (as its a sport) and Aikido which is a martial art.

Notable non-chess achievement: Unfortunately all my notable achievements involve chess.

Notable chess achievement: Probably winning the 2003 Australian Junior Chess championship is the achievement I value the most.

Favourite player: Topalov because he plays to win

Favourite book: I enjoyed Alexei Shirov's “Fire on board” although I didn't really understand it.

First learned chess: At the age of 7.

First taught by: My father.

Chess club: I was a regular member of the Koala Chess Club a decade ago and I still play for the club in the WSCP.

Things I like about chess comps: Although I don't want to admit it I really like winning. I also enjoy the competitive atmosphere.

Things I don't like about chess comps: Tournaments always seem to start at least 30 minutes late. I certainly hope this tournament will be an exception :)

First taught by: Self learned - Got into this embarassing situation when I thought I was asked to play for the school in chinese chess instead of chess, hence had to learn the night before on the net.
