Finswimming races are like ordinary swimming races but much faster!  The world mens 100m finswimming surface record is 35.59 secs — the 100m swimming freestyle record is 47.84 secs.

Finswimming uses a big fibreglass or carbon fibre monofin driven by both feet. Flippers can also be used.

There are three kinds of races in the pool and are run like swimming races:

bullet

Apnea (Breathhold) — underwater for 25m or 50m.

bullet

Surface — on the surface using a snorkel — 25m through to 1500m.

bullet

Immersion (SCUBA) — underwater using breathing apparatus —100m, 400m or 800m

Open water events have rarely been conducted in Australia.

Adrenaline Spearfishing Supplies in Brisbane is now an Australian distributor for WaterWay monofins ― look under Fins then Monofins.  Vikings Finswimming has acquired a number of WaterWay monofins and are pleased to recommend them.

SpearGear Australia in Brisbane is an Australian distributor for Special Fins who make a variety of Carbon fibre and composite/glass monofins (and heaps of bi-fins) for freediving and finswimming purposes.

OZFIN is the national sports organisation for finswimming.

CMAS is the international organisation which governs finswimming ― look under the Sports Committee tab then Finswimming. Latest rules are ,Version 2006/02 (PDF).
