Privacy Policy

Privacy is a sensitive issue, and Australian privacy laws set out what can or can’t be published on the internet.  Most concerns relate to living people.

The Australian Attorney-General has published a brief fact sheet on Privacy and how it relates to genealogy at  http://www.law.gov.au/www/agdHome.nsf/Web+Pages/D273B1F8F08F0557CA256BDB000B2B46?OpenDocument

A careful reading of this document indicates that the collection, compilation, storage and publishing of genealogy data for non-business, family history purposes is not prevented by Australian Privacy Laws, particularly information which is on public record, eg births, deaths & marriages, newspaper articles and notices, probate records, etc.  In fact, specific exemptions are given to individuals researching their family history.

The sources of information underpinning the family trees on this site, primarily are those already on the public record and released by Commonwealth and State agencies eg Birth, Death and Marriage CD-Roms or maintained as online data bases by those agencies eg NSW, Victoria BDM records or the WW1 and WW2 databases maintained by the Commonwealth.  Other public sources relied include library resource material such as records on microfiche, newspaper notices and articles, books etc.  For a more complete list of references that have been used to derive data for this site see Reference material

Generally I don't have a problem about publishing information  about people whether deceased or living when its already on the public record somewhere else.  However, the information published on living people is restricted to their name and date and place of their birth, christening and marriage.  For the living no detail is published on adoption, divorce, occupation, residential address etc for privacy reasons

Having said this, should any living individual have any concerns or object to any of their personal information appearing on this site then I will remove the offending material at their request, especially if they believe that information is not already on the public record, or is counter to the Privacy Act.
