Cycling around Lake Burley Griffin in the heart of Canberra can now include the lake's East Basin.
A long neglected part of the lake shore has been opened up to cyclists following completion of the bike path between Moreshead Drive and the Molonglo River.
Instead of having to finish the lake circuit at the Kings Avenue bridge, it is now possible to continue east around the top end of the lake and Molonglo river, but only in an anticlockwise direction. However, very soon a path will be built to enable the circuit to be cycled in a clockwise direction.
The route: At the southern end of Kings Avenue Bridge turn east and follow the bike path through Bowen Park (see Canberra Cycleways Map), and left into the wide and deserted Mundaring Drive. Continue along Mundaring Drive past the boat harbour and the industrial site soon to become the Kingston Foreshores redevelopment. About 50m from where Mundaring Drive ends turn left into a car park by the "Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Park" sign. Ride through the car park and onto a concrete path which skirts and eventually crosses Jerrabomberra Creek. The path ends at the Dairy Road carpark next to a bird watching area.
Exit the car park across a cattle grid and turn left onto the shoulder of Dairy Road. This is marked with a bicycle logo and has been designed for cyclists to ride safely around the Wetlands to the bridge across the Molonglo River (Because it is part of the road, cyclists MUST NOT ride in the opposite direction). But a bike path is coming soon!!
At the Molonglo River bridge ride onto the bike path to cross the bridge and follow it down onto the northern bank of the river. Follow a dirt track for about 200 metres past a public toilet until it rejoins the new Moreshead Drive bike path. Follow this path along the river bank, past the Boathouse restaurant (unfortunately only open for lunches and dinner and not open at all on Sundays) and back under Kings Avenue Bridge to rejoin the bike path at the Carillion.
