Bicycle Commuting

Bicyle commuting is encouraged in Canberra through the ACT Government's Bicycle Strategy "Canberra Bicycle 2000" and the ACT Transport Strategy.

A number of improvements to Canberra's main roads have been undertaken to provide safer on-road bike commuting and improved traffic flow for motorists.

Improvements usually involve changing the linemarkings to provide wide kerbside lanes eg Canberra Avenue, or by making the road shoulders smooth, and attractive for cycling, eg Belconnen way and Adelaide Avenue.

Improvements are usually done in conjunction with road resurfacing or reconstruction.

Recent improvements include completion of the on-road facilities along Yarra Glen and Adelaide Avenue between Woden and Civic, and on Barton Highway between the NSW Border and William Slim Drive.

For more information about on-road cycling facilities for commuters, call Terry Simpson at the ACT Government on 207 6677.
