1997/98 ACT bicycle construction budget

The 1997-98 ACT budget was delivered on 6 May. It includes over $1.8
million for bicycle facilities. This is over $1 million more than last year.
Details of bicycle projects below.
Bicycle Paths
Tuggeranong:
Over $500,000 has been earmarked to improve access to and through Tuggeranong Town
Centre. Paths are planned to be completed in April 1998.
- Alongside Athllon Drive from Soward Way to where the bike path presently peters out just
north of Drakeford Drive in Kambah
- Soward Way through the town centre between Erindale Drive and Athllon Drive
North Canberra:
Two more missing links in the bike path route around the eastern end of the lake will
be built this year. Planning and design for the final connection across the Jerrabomberra
Wetlands will also start this year.
After years of complaints from the Campbell Park Offices cyclists, work will also start
on providing a safe bike route from north of the lake.
- Lake Burley Griffin bike path extension from the Carillion near Kings Avenue Bridge to
Menindee Drive near the Boathouse Restaurant ($185,000 - completion planned before
Christmas 1998).
- The Morshead Drive final bike path connection to the Dairy Road bridge over the Molonglo
River will be built as part of the Morshead Drive upgrading and is planned to be completed
by Christmas 1997.
- A bike path alongside Fairbairn Avenue, connecting Rosenthal Street to Northcott Drive
will be completed by June 1998 at a cost of $165,000.
- The oldest bike path in Canberra is progressively being reconstructed. The next section
of the Sullivan's Creek path, which bumps over the tree roots between David Street and
Macarthur Avenue will be reconstructed by April 1998 at a cost of $175,000.
- Traffic improvements to the Northbourne Avenue traffic lights at Antill Street will
include better bike crossing facilities (completion Christmas 1998)
- The upgrading around City Walk and the bus interchange will include some more bike
lockers which should be installed this year.
South Canberra:
- A particularly bad section of the Monaro Highway north of Williamsdale will be
reconstructed by mid 1999 at a cost of almost $3 million. Cyclists will get some road
shoulder to ride on.
Gungahlin:
Bike riders from Gungahlin will get a safe route to North Canberra when the bike path
alongside Gungahlin Drive is built this year. A missing link alongside Gundaroo Drive will
give access to the new town centre and the northern Gungahlin suburbs.
- Bike path alongside Gundaroo Drive, between Gungahlin Drive and the town centre access
road
- The bike path alongside Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston will be extended along the
alignment of the Gungahlin Drive extension to the Barton Highway and across to the
existing bike path alongside Ellenborough Street. This will give a safe access route to
North Canberra and Kaleen.

Other bicycle facilities to be provided in 1997/98 includes spending about
$150,000 on ad hoc improvements to footpaths around Canberra.

Design work will also start in 1997/98 on these bike paths, estimated
to cost $875,000 when completed:
- More upgrading of the Sullivan's Creek bike path, between Macarthur Avenue and Wattle
Street
- The final bike path connection around Lake Burley Griffin across the Jerrabomberra
Wetlands between Moreshead Drive and Mundaring Drive, Kingston
- Further improvements for bike access to Campbell Park offices and Duntroon will be
designed for Fairbairn Avenue, between the roundabout at Northcott Drive and General
Bridges Drive into Duntroon.
