PROJECT DETAILS

Text Box: Ranger's Office, elevated above the ground to take advantage of cooling breezes. Lightweight steel studwork and steel wall lining retain little heat.

The Bawinanga Ranger’s Station acts as a support base for rangers and scientists involved in the development of sustainable land-use practices for the Aboriginal people of central Arnhem Land.  Four separate buildings were constructed at the Ranger’s Station on a ridge overlooking the Tomkinson River floodplain between 1995 and 1997.  They are simple, unpretentious buildings sitting comfortably within an extremely valuable and delicate eco-system.  The buildings respond to the dynamics of climate and lifestyle concerns while minimizing their impact on the environment.  The form of the buildings and their environmental response are not dealt with simply as an issue of style and aesthetics.  Each building has a form and character that responds to environmental, climatic, economic and functional concerns while developing a strong relationship between architecture and the environment.
