The Challenge

The Anger home has been built on a small  block of land which is part of a canal estate at Scarborough, North of Brisbane.  The aim was to build a house using conventional materials and construction techniques in keeping with the surrounding homes, which provided thermal comfort all year round without requiring additional heating or cooling.  The house was to take full advantage of the water views and sea breezes offered with this sort of site, but it should cost about the same as the more modest houses on the canal estate.

The project is interesting because it shows that it is possible to build a thermally comfortable and more energy efficient home without necessarily being out of keeping with the general style of the surrounding neighbourhood of much less energy efficient houses.  It also shows that this can be achieved at little extra cost, if care is taken from the beginning to consider thermal design along side other major aspects in the design process.
