Location and Climate

Site

The Anger house is located at Scarborough which is about 30 km North of the Brisbane Central Business District.  The canal estate in which the house has been built is a fairly recent development which is to be extended towards the west.

The members of the Anger family were attracted to the site due to their interest in water based activities, particularly sailing.  This specific site was selected because the house could be oriented towards the view to the North.  This made it easier to design a home that was energy efficient even though the “front” of the house to the street faces South,

The major problem encountered was to design a house to fit onto the small 698 mblock that was large enough for the family needs, and still have a 3m access driveway from the street to the rear boat ramp.  This was overcome by building two stories rather than one.

Climate

Brisbane’s mild climate allows houses to be built which require no additional heating or cooling energy to maintain year round thermal comfort.

Long term climate data from nearby Brisbane Airport :

Average humidity in summer is just under 70%.

Prevailing winds in summer are from the south east with afternoon sea breezes from the north around to the east.

The average daily horizontal irradiation is 17.8 MJ/m˛.

Internal design conditions were based on thermal neutrality between 21°C and 27°C.
