Canberra Bushfire Aftermath

April 2003

Three months after the devastation, a visit to some of Canberra’s forests.

It’s hard to imagine the nature and extent of the devastation till you see it. These pictures give but a clue.

This sign is only lightly singed.  Others looked worse.  Along the edge of the road are wilted plastic guide-posts which look like ailing plants.

This is the remains of the Cotter restaurant. I’ve been coming here since the 70’s and, though it’s nothing special as buildings go, it’s sad to see it this way.  I can’t imagine seeing the same happen to my house.

This tree is the diameter of a full-sized power pole.  The wind has come through here and carved a great swathe through the forrest, snapping the trees like twigs.
The following photos show more of the same.

The extend of the devastation is just amazing.  Sobering to realise that it extends way down into Victoria.
