About Us

Information about GALA Events

GALA Events organises social ballroom dances on a Saturday night in Canberra. These occur at least once a month. See the GALA Calendar for dates and venues. We also organise groups to go to other balls and dinner dances

GALA Events is not affiliated with any dance studio, club or any other oganisation. It DOES, however, have reciprocal arrangements with dance studios and clubs with regards to putting out flyers and including events in newsletters.

GALA Events is run by Christine Lockey assisted by Eileen Tannachion, Jane Slater, Brendon Gardner, Lyn Stuart and Tulio Losanno.

We are now into our eighth successful year of social dances in Canberra.

Flyers
GALA Events is happy to put out flyers from dance studios and dance clubs in exchange for putting out ours. Please bring them to a dance and give them to Christine or mail them to GALA Events, 20 Birrigai Square, Ngunnawal, ACT 2913. We retain the right to decide what is put out on display.

Email Newsletter
We also have an email newsletter which is sent out once a month with updates as required. We include other dances and balls of a social nature in this newsletter. Please email any information through to Christine
. The next GALA dance is listed first then all other events in chronological order. We retain the right to decide what may be included in the newsletter.

Announcements
Announcements regarding forthcoming events are made at 11pm at each GALA dance. We announce all the events yet to come that were included in the last newsletter and any new ones that will go in the next newsletter. The announcements should be related to social dancing. For example a social dance, charity ball, a group being organised to attend a dance event. We can make the announcement for you or you can do it yourself. We retain the right to decide what should be announced.

Sound System

The sound system is available for hire. Email Tulio for further information.

Dance Etiquette

The first time someone asks you for a dance, it is polite to accept. Once you have had one or two dances with that person, it is okay to decline future requests.
Gentlemen, please remember that ladies are shy about asking a man to dance. And ladies, it's okay to ask a gentleman to dance.
Try asking someone you don't really know for a dance once in a while. Ladies, gentlemen are also shy about asking ladies to dance - especially if they feel they don't know many steps. Try asking a gentleman for a dance, and reassure him it's okay if he only knows four steps!
Please do not stand around on the dance floor - you run the risk of being knocked over. Please move off when you have finished dancing.
While dancing, please watch the floor around you to avoid crashing into other people. Gentlemen should watch what's coming up ahead, and ladies should watch what's happening behind their partner. There's nothing worse than an elbow where it's not meant to be, or trodden-on feet.
